The Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan, announced on 17 December 2012 that a grant scheme will be available for householders whose septic tanks and other domestic waste water treatment systems need repairing or updating following inspection under the Water Services (Amendment) Act 2012.

  • Householders will need to register their system by 1 February 2013 to be eligible for grant aid.
  • The Grant will be available to those households who have been inspected and where remedial or upgrade works have been recommended in the inspection report.

The scheme will award

  • Up to €4,000 or 80% of the value of the works to householders whose household income is up to €50,000.
  • Around €2,500 or 50% of the value of the works will be given to households whose income is between €50,001 and €75,000 .

Inspections are expected to commence in 2013 and will be based on a national inspection plan currently being finalised by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Householders will be notified in writing in advance by their local authority if their system is to be inspected.
